Dance is one of the well known genres of performing arts. The complete history of dance is fairly evasive, but it is safe to say that it predates the 18th century. Evidence of prehistoric dance have been found in the Bhimbetka Rock Shelters located in India. These ancient rock shelters are more than 30,000 years old. Archaeologists have found tomb paintings dating as far back as 3300 BC with pictures of dancing figures. Dance was often performed to tell stories or myths. Dance performances were also used to show affection, to pass stories from one generation to the next, and as rituals to heal the sick.

Other types of performing arts include music, drama, and theater. A performing artist is one who performs their material in front of a live audience. Singers, comedians, and entertainers are all performing artists. Depending on their act, a performing artists may use stage makeup or costumes to change their appearance during their performance. They may also use special props to enhance their act. Magicians are performing artists who use optical illusions to capture the attention of their audience. The primary genres of performing arts are Renaissance, Modern-era, and Post-War performances. Performing artists can be found in countries all around the world.

An ideal way to find information on the different types of performing arts is to visit your local library. The library has concise and detailed information regarding the history of dance, as well as other performing arts. If you are interested in this type of career, visit the Performing Arts Library of your preferred university to get an idea of their programs and the types of equipment that is used during the course of study. Online resources are also useful when you are searching for a complete history of dance and the performing arts.

Being a part of any performing arts scene might seem like a piece of cake. You do your shows, attend rehearsals, and feel the satisfaction of a job well done. However, that isn’t at all how it is. Being part of the community means doing what you have to do to elevate others as well as yourself.

Being a part of the scene means being a fan of it too. That matters more than you think it does. You have to support as well as perform. It’s the best way to ensure that people support you. The work out there might be rewarding, but something is taken away from it when performers are playing to empty houses. Make sure you get out there and make it known that you support.

There is a lot to be said about taking care of others. You want people to help you and be there for you, hence you have to be able to do the same. Look out for those that do the same. Be ready to recommend to others who are looking for talent, the name of your friend. Make sure that you are letting them know when good opportunities present themselves. Don’t be afraid to share opportunity with others and they won’t be afraid to share it with you.

Don’t be afraid to really form strong partnerships and friendships. It’s hard to make it in the performing arts business, but it’s not hard to form lifelong bonds with your fellow performers. It’s arduous like a triathlon where your friend support is more important than the right triathlon gear. You will be satisfied that even though you might not be the biggest star you are one of the best people on the scene.

Audience

Improv is one of the hardest types of performing arts out there. You have to be able to think on the fly, say random stuff and keep the audience amused. Nothing is more disheartening than looking out into the audience and seeing a bunch of uninterested audience members. Maybe they are yawning, sleeping, checking out sports betting sites on their phones, texting or emailing friends but they are certainly not paying attention to your comedy act.

Here are some hints on how to handle audience members that don’t pay attention to you.

Speak Louder

Sometimes randomly saying words louder can catch those people’s attention. It’s not a matter of them not wanting to pay attention to it, it’s that in the world of modern technology people get easily distracted. By speaking louder you can pull these people back into the show and what you are doing up on stage.

Ignore Them

If you are up there performing you should be performing for the love of it. Don’t pay attention to the one audience member who is using his cell phone. No one likes a diva on stage and focusing on one bad audience member while there are 100s of good ones could come off as a diva attitude. A diva attitude can really come across badly on stage and make others not want to watch you either. So just simply move on and focus on the good audience members that are out there.

Audience members may be everything when it comes to a live stage production but remember if you are a truly gifted and passionate performer and putting your all into a performance, the audience is likely to be captivated by your stage presence and love for the art of improv.

Performaning arts, from theater, drama and orchestra, have seen very few major changes since the middle ages. The middle ages saw it take its birth among wandering bars and poets known as strolling minstrels. One can argue that the birth of religious theater took place in 2500 B.C in Egypt and moved on to the ancient Greek where it really took form, but it never stood the test of time. The Greeks took their theater seriously and developed laws, regulations, professions, and theater architecture. It is sad that this era of performing arts was lost permanently with the fall of Greece. But the Greek theater concepts and ideas stayed alive.

Performance art did take form in thousands of different forms in Europe, but failed to find a steady audience to keep it alive. The 16th, 17th and 18th Centuries saw a unique theater emerge due to the blending of the Indian, Chinese and Japanese theaters. However, enough of the history, let’s see where modern performing arts are evolving.

True performance arts have become a romantic night out for a wealthy couple or an exotic night out in Vegas for tourists. Though this will suffice for it to stay alive, it cannot help the grow and evolve. Colleges and schools promote theater, but every budding artist dreams of starring in a Hollywood movie and not Broadway. Television and internet have caused a direct effect on performance arts. Just like the change internet has brought about in business with the facilitation of off shore and in casinos with online casino games, it is projected to do the same to performing arts. The definition of performance art is slowly changing from live performance to recorded live performance. Lately, the increasing popularity of reality television competitions has proved that performance arts has a huge scope to expand. But is it ready to expand?
