Being a part of any performing arts scene might seem like a piece of cake. You do your shows, attend rehearsals, and feel the satisfaction of a job well done. However, that isn’t at all how it is. Being part of the community means doing what you have to do to elevate others as well as yourself.

Being a part of the scene means being a fan of it too. That matters more than you think it does. You have to support as well as perform. It’s the best way to ensure that people support you. The work out there might be rewarding, but something is taken away from it when performers are playing to empty houses. Make sure you get out there and make it known that you support.

There is a lot to be said about taking care of others. You want people to help you and be there for you, hence you have to be able to do the same. Look out for those that do the same. Be ready to recommend to others who are looking for talent, the name of your friend. Make sure that you are letting them know when good opportunities present themselves. Don’t be afraid to share opportunity with others and they won’t be afraid to share it with you.

Don’t be afraid to really form strong partnerships and friendships. It’s hard to make it in the performing arts business, but it’s not hard to form lifelong bonds with your fellow performers. It’s arduous like a triathlon where your friend support is more important than the right triathlon gear. You will be satisfied that even though you might not be the biggest star you are one of the best people on the scene.

As the United States continues to struggle with a sluggish economy, so are artists and lovers of the arts struggling to support their career, and in some cases livelihoods.
As families are forced to tighten their budgetary belts, spending money on what many consider an ‘extra’ within the arts community is getting harder. Families that try to inject culture into their children’s lives with several appearances at the theatre per year, are staying home, and those that once frequented arts markets are saving those extra dollars to pay for household necessities instead of springing for a new trinket or painting
Many artists that perhaps quit ‘regular’ jobs to pursue their passion for a career in the arts, are being forced to go back to school or take a dead-end job just to make ends meet.
As the economy improves, and families go back to work, it will be crucial for art lovers and those that enjoy all forms of the arts, to return to supporting these passions. For some, supporting the arts is as important as a National Football league enthusiast in following sports spread betting on a weekly basis.
The arts have always been a way for artists to express their moods and feelings. For the arts lovers, following the arts is a great way to see things through the eyes of others be it vocally, through acting, or on the canvas of a beautiful painting. Visiting the theatre during the holidays to watch The Nutcracker with your children is a great way to continue a love of the arts to a future generation.
Despite recent struggles within the arts world, this community will survive. Those within the arts world have always been subject to the whims of the public, and these theatrical performers, vocalists and artists will continue to prosper despite the woes of the current economic situation.
